These handy devices enable you to shift gear, as well as help to keep your chain on. Otherwise known as front derailleurs, they are designed to work with a specific number of chain rings (either double or triple) and speeds (from 7/8 speed all the way up to 11). You need to establish that your new front mech will both fit your frame, as well as be suitable for your current drivetrain. If in doubt, try to replace the older model with a similar derailleur - you won't need to replace front mechs as often as rear, in some cases they can last decades! The industry leaders in this department are Shimano, SRAM, and Campagnolo, although companies such as FSA also produce their range of derailleurs too.

Shimano Front Mechs

Shimano are a Japanese manufacturer primarily known for their cycling components, and to a lesser extent shoes and clothing. Founded in 1921, Shimano is widely believed to be the largest cycling component manufacturer in the world, having reached this status through a combination of innovation, reliability and value for money. Whatever your style of riding, whether it be road or MTB, Shimano will have a component range to suit your level and budget, from the low end Alivio and Tiagra to the professional standard XTR and Dura-Ace. Over the years, Shimano have revolutionised bicycle gear, brake and pedal systems, such as the recessed SPD, Hollowtech crank arms and smooth shifting Hyperglide sprockets. Initially their component range faced competition from Suntour, whereas nowadays their primary rivals for market share are SRAM and Campagnolo. If you wish to save money on their components and apparel, please visit my Shimano section, where I list as many money saving deals as I can find.

For additional information on Shimano's cycling equipment, please visit either or their wikipedia page - this includes information on Shimano's history, including non-cycling equipment.

About Wiggle

I originally found this deal at Wiggle, who are widely established as one of the biggest cycle retailers in the UK. The first incarnation of this giant was as a small bike shop based in Portsmouth, named Butler Cycles. A few years later this evolved into Bikes @ Butlers to highlight their intentions to move the business online with the .com boom and subsequent rise in online sales. At the end of May in 1999 was launched by Mitch Dall and Harvey Jones. A rapid growth resulted in a need to move premises, and so in 2002 it relocated to Jackson Close, Portsmouth. This strong growth continued, and Wiggle has relocated twice since, the first being to Lakeside 1000, and then leaving Pompey altogether for a huge warehouse located centrally in Wolverhampton. Similarly to CRC, Wiggle stock many own brands, such as dhb, Eastway, Lifeline and Verenti, as well as bike, components and clothing from all of the leading manufacturers. Despite it's origins as a bike shop, Wiggle continue to stock equipment and apparel for not just road cycling and mountain biking, with extensive product lines for other disciplines such as triathlon kit, children's and commuters products and also running clothing and accessories. Prompt in delivery, and offering efficient returns and competitive pricing, Wiggle remain a firm favourite amongst serious and recreational cyclists alike, not least because of the customary bags of Haribo they include free with orders to keep their customers sweet!

If you would like to find out more about Wiggle, their homepage can be located at, or for a more detailed version of their history, their wikipedia article.
