Shimano XTR M980 10sp Rapidfire Shifter
This sleek pod shifter is specifically designed for MTB use as it provides ultra-smooth and precise actuation as you blast across the woodland.
Keeping you in full control of the ride, this fantastic component is engineered to perfectly match the needs and the riding styles of individual mountain bikers. It features the latest component engineering and some of the finest Shimano technologies available to set a new benchmark for all cross-country racers and trail riders. This is the ultimate choice of upgrade for riders who want to benefit from superior shifting performance without any unnecessary weight holding you back.
Technologies: Dyna-Sys: SHIMANO's next generation 10-speed MTB drivetrain.
SHIMANO presents the drivetrain technology for mountain bikes: DYNA-SYS. This revolutionary technology uses a 10-speed cassette, but that is not the only feature of this system.
Highlight is a completely redesigned drivetrain that creates real added benefits for the rider. It's not only an extra gear. It's about closer gear ratios for a smoother shifting performance and improved power transfer. It's about riding optimized gear combinations that improve efficiency and durability.
It's all about performance: DYNA-SYS offers a more stable drivetrain for any type of rider! Sil-Tec: SHIMANO's ultra-low friction surface treatment. Superior to simple coating, SIL-TEC is an advanced plating process that improves system performance through the use of embedded fluorine particles. SIL-TEC products run smoother and wear longer in all conditions.
Instant Release: INSTANT RELEASE shifting replaces the two-stage click and release shifting you are familiar with. INSTANT RELEASE shifting releases cable as soon the lever is activated, resulting in the quickest possible gear changes. Whether it is an upshift with a top normal rear derailleur or a downshift with low normal rear derailleur a quicker shift is always a better shift.
Multi Release: Previous shifting systems shifted faster in one direction than the other. Choosing top normal or low normal always meant sacrificing shifting speed in one direction. Now with MULTI RELEASE you can release shift two gears in one stroke.
The result - the fastest possible shifting in both directions regardless of rear derailleur choice.
SP41: With OT-SP41 the entire length of the outer casing is pre-lubricated with a special silicone grease for quick and precise shifting performance. OT-SP41 maximally reduces the inner cable friction to provide quick response to operations and easy/effortless shifting.
Moreover, power loss due to delay in shifting and fatigue by shifting especially when you ride on the terrain with many ups and downs as well as a long distance is also reduced. 8 color options are also available for outer casing to meet many requests.
2-Way Release: The RAPIDFIRE PLUS shifter release lever is commonly called a trigger because it is operated like a pistol, by pulling toward the grip.
The release lever of RAPIDFIRE PLUS shifters from SHIMANO ALIVIO to XTR can be operated in this same manner but adds the ability to activate a release shift by pushing with the thumb.
Rapidfire Plus: Mountain bikers have used RAPIDFIRE PLUS since 1985. RAPIDFIRE PLUS is still a winning choice from a wide range of riders from XC racers to freeriders.
RAPIDFIRE PLUS is suited to quick shifting, giving riders the ability to downshift three gears in one stroke. RAPIDFIRE PLUS shifters from DEORE to XTR all feature 2WAY-RELEASE, which means release shifts by pull of the index finger or push of the thumb.

Please ensure that you select a shifter which is compatible with your bike - firstly in terms if number of gears, but also type of riding, and finally the manufacturer of the rest of the drivetrain. As a general rule of thumb, for simplicity it's best to use the same brand for shifters as you do for your rear mech.

Shimano are a Japanese manufacturer primarily known for their cycling components, and to a lesser extent shoes and clothing. Founded in 1921, Shimano is widely believed to be the largest cycling component manufacturer in the world, having reached this status through a combination of innovation, reliability and value for money. Whatever your style of riding, whether it be road or MTB, Shimano will have a component range to suit your level and budget, from the low end Alivio and Tiagra to the professional standard XTR and Dura-Ace. Over the years, Shimano have revolutionised bicycle gear, brake and pedal systems, such as the recessed SPD, Hollowtech crank arms and smooth shifting Hyperglide sprockets. Initially their component range faced competition from Suntour, whereas nowadays their primary rivals for market share are SRAM and Campagnolo. If you wish to save money on their components and apparel, please visit my Shimano section, where I list as many money saving deals as I can find.
