About Santini Cycling Clothing

Santini have been producing performance road cycling gear for many decades, and like their rivals Castelli have been responsible for several world's firsts, such as creating bib shorts out of lycra rather than wool and the antibacterial fabric chamois in 1976. In 1988 they introduced the world to breathable yet windproof Windstopper garments, and to this day are constantly improving their product ranges with their carbon fabric, acquazero and interactive cycling kit. Whilst not quite as pricey as other premium brands, the Santini name is very much associated with quality. It's aimed at those professional and recreational road riders requiring performance cycling gear which won't let them down. This is further underlined by Santini's strong association with the Giro d'Italia and UCI World Championships. As a popular brand amongst UK riders, my Santini section is regularly updated with fresh deals, to help save you money on your premium cycling kit.

For more information on Santini, you can visit their UK website or their wikipedia page for a more in-depth guide to their rich history in cycling.

Amazon UK

Amazon famously started off as a book shop operated from a garage in Bellevue, Washington. Founded by Jeff Bezos in 1995, the company rapidly expanded it's product ranges, from books to CDs and DVDs to eventually include pretty much everything under the sun. This is highlighted in the recognisable logo, where the orange arrow points from "A" to "Z". The low pricing and fast delivery (if you use their popular Prime membership) results in Amazon being a popular retailer for cycling products, both from Amazon directly and the 3rd party sellers as well.

So what does this mean for me as a bargain hunting cyclist?! The good news is that Amazon regularly have ridiculous discounts on individual items. Whereas most retailers will discount a product equally in all sizes and colours, Amazon have the unusual trait of reducing a single size at 70-80% off, whereas the rest of the sizes will be at full retail price. If you're prepared to hunt for deals, then you can grab some amazing bargains - I've bought £160 cycling jackets for £25 - and once the item has been purchased, the price has immediately returned to the original RRP again. There doesn't seem to be a great deal of logic to what is reduced, it's not just certain sizes or ugly colours, but if you're prepared to put a bit of work in, you can save hundreds.

Please note: With designer or expensive goods, it is worth only buying products directly from Amazon or third party sellers with excellent feedback, to ensure that they are genuine models and not cheap copies.

Guide to buying Cycling Jerseys

Cheap Cycling JerseysSo should I buy this jersey? Firstly ask yourself the following questions:

1. Will it fit? Different manufacturers use different sizing, with relaxed and race (sometimes called Italian) fit being a baggy and tight fit respectively. Some brands run notoriously tight, whereas others are more generous - it's worth viewing either the manufacturer's website, or a sizing guide on the retailer's website to establish whether it's correct for you.

2. Is the jersey suitable for my style of riding? Is this jersey designed for road, MTB, triathlon or more suited to casual leisurely rides? Will it be suitable for the typical weather conditions that I ride in? Does it have enough pockets, the right length zip, and is it breathable, windproof, waterproof or any other characteristics you require from the perfect jersey? If your answer to any of these is no, then it's probably best to pass up on this jersey and wait for something more suitable.

3. Is it actually any good? Or is it cheap for a reason? Please check out impartial reviews before buying - usually if you search on Google then you'll find one of the major cycling publications has tested it. Search Google for Santini Ladies Gold Aero Jersey Reviews.

Alternatively, most of the retailers I link to have a customer reviews section (usually lower down the page) where you can find out how just well the jersey holds up in real world conditions.

4. Do I need another jersey? There's no point buying something just because it's cheap - if you're never going to use it then you're better off saving your money.

5. Can I afford it? Whilst I spend my time finding cycling deals like this jersey, the last thing I want is to have my visitors living beyond their means. Obviously you're all responsible adults, I just don't want anyone getting into debt or overstretching themselves.

Want more information on identifying the perfect cycling jersey? Evans Cycles have an extensive guide to cycle clothing which features a detailed jersey section, and British Cycling also touches (briefly) on the subject here. Alternatively Cycle Surgery has a jersey guide specifically for roadies, and Road.cc has a broad guide to all kinds of cycle related clothing, including jerseys.
