The Orbis II C35 Ltd Stealth Wheelset is the premium clincher wheelset from the 3T Orbis II range of rim-brake wheels. Wide 25mm all-carbon-fibre rims ideally support fat, race-weight clincher tyres at lower inflation pressures, for more grip and comfort. The 3T linear+ system optimises build quality; spoking is 20 front/24 rear, with internal inverted nipples. The carbon-fibre rim is 35mm deep, with a blunt profile for stable aerodynamic performance at typical angles to the wind. Sapim CX-Ray spokes and ceramic speed bearings are standard, saving a further 65g over the 3T Team model wheelset for an all-up weight of 1.442kg. Full-Aero Wider Rims 3T Orbis II wheels have 25mm rims which are the new, wider standard for today's breed of fatter, lightweight tyres. A wider rim lets you run the latest race-weight tyres at lower pressure. The tyre's wider, shorter contact patch with the road surface gives you more grip and comfort than traditional narrow tyres at high inflation pressures.At the same time, 3T rims are aerodynamically profiled for low drag at typical yaw angles. Linear+ Optimised Build 3T linear+ system optimises all-round build quality. Orbis II wheels have straight spokes that run directly from hub to nipple. Spoke ends locate perfectly square in the purpose-designed hubs; and at the nipple end, the rim drillings are angled perfectly in line with the spoke. Nipples are internal, so rim drillings are no wider than needed to pass the spoke through. This benefits strength, appearance, and aerodynamics. Nipples are screwed on upside-down, bearing on the rim's internal surface via a cup washer. This distributes the load evenly on the rim so spokes can safely be done up tighter. Asymmetric Rim The 3T Linear+ system is further enhanced in some models by asymmetric rims. Front wheels with disc brakes, as well as rear wheels (with or without discs) , have off-centre hub flanges. On one side the spokes are at a steeper bracing angle, so they must be tensioned more. The 3T asymmetric rim compensates for this by reducing the difference in bracing angle between the two sides. Spoke tensioning is more equal to either side, making a better-performing, more resilient wheelset with better lateral stiffness. Linear+ ensures that rim drillings are perfectly aligned to meet these demanding mechanical requirements. Both the 58mm and 32mm rims have an asymmetric structure and double-angled spoke drillings, for a perfectly balanced wheelset. Additionally, 3T Orbis II hubs have double-cross spokes on both sides. Opposite spokes on the same side are perpendicular to each another, so directly opposed. This equalises spoke load under torque for better power transfer without spoke wind-up, a key benefit when braking is effected at the hub, as well as when accelerating. Modular Hub Spindles 3T Orbis II hubs have a light-alloy, oversize spindle with modular end-caps. The modular end-caps allow you to easily change from quick-release to thru-axle, and back again. 3T is a brand synonymous with lightweight road cycling components, such as stems, bars and seatposts. Founded in 1961, 3T (Tecnologia del Tubo Torino - or Turin Tube Technology) was initially named 3TTT, and is situated near Milano in a city called Bergamo, in Northern Italy. As the name suggests, initially their products were made with metal - steel to be precise - as the founder Mario Dedioniggi specialised in working with this material. By 1970, steel was replaced by the increasingly popular alloy, in order to save weight without sacrificing performance. 5 years later the famous Superleggera handlebar was born, weighing just 250g, which at the time was believed to be the lightest handlebar on the market. It was constructed from 7075 aluminium alloy, which was usually reserved for aerospace industries.
Over the years 3T has provided components for victorious Tour de France, Olympic, World Championships and successful World Hour Record attempts. In 1984 Moser pushed past the 50km barrier in his hour attempt using a 3T bar, eventually setting a new record of 51.151km. In recent years Ryder Hesjedal won the 2013 Giro d'Italia on a 3T equipped bike. In the MTB world, Nicolas Vouilloz won his 3rd Downhill World Championships whilst riding with a 3T bar. Nowadays 3T produce components in carbon fibre, as well as having cheaper lightweight alloy ranges for those on a budget. Merlin Cycles started life in 1993, founded by John Moss as a mail order Mountain Bike business ran directly from his spare bedroom in Chorley. Due to early growth, shortly afterwards he opened his first outlet in Ormskirk, and a few years later in 1998, the company grew into larger premises, moving to Leyland.
In the 1990's and early 2000's, Merlin were known for their ranges of mountain bike hardtails, released under the Rock Lobster and Merlin "Malt" brands. These steel and aluminium hardtails were designed in house, available as framesets or complete bikes, representing excellent value for money. The company was also well known for their handbuilt MTB wheels, which in my experience lasted for years without needing truing!
Merlin have always been competitive on pricing, particularly on suspension forks, brakes, wheels and groupsets, which continues to this day. Nowadays they have introduced road cycling equipment and clothing into their product ranges, due to the increase in popularity in this field, thus catering for a broader range of cyclists.
